I check the "Show image in preview window but cannot get the image. I can only get the image from the program i'm using at the time. I use to be able to get my phots with the image preview but no longer. Help.

My first guess would be that your other program is saving the file in a format that GIMP doesn't recognize. You might try saving the file from the other program using one of the standardized image formats (PNG, TIFF, JPEG).

And as a sidenote.. if you ever need to choose a picture format choose XCF if you're working within Gimp, or always always PNG in other cases.

PNG: It's lossless, it's full bit range, it can be transparent. It's all the properties of JPEG and GIF images and then some.

It really helps if you say which operating system and gimp version you are using.

As well as the above excellent advice and assuming you are using windows, it could be that some computer security is stopping the creation of the Gimp pre-view thumbnails.

Use Windows Explorer and find the "Documents and Settings\<your account>\.thumbnails"

Is there one? If not, there is your problem.
If there is one, try deleting .thumbnails and gimp will re-create it.
Might just be a cure.

This is only for gimp, windows uses a different system and save in a thumbnail .db file, location varies from XP to Vista/Win7
