pattern fill question

Postby Birdfan » Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:37 pm

Is there a way to make a pattern fill follow the angle of the object you're filling?
I have an oval that is slightly rotated (like about a 25° or so) and I'd like a dot pattern to follow that degree of rotation. I did it once but for the life of me, I can't remember how I did it.

(Kinda like this:)

Notice how the pattern fill is not at 90° but it tilts along with the oval.

Can't you fill first, and rotate second?

No, it rotates the entire selection, not just the pattern fill, and then the item is out of place.

Can you fit your selection to the area in a better way? using the lasso, or magic wand?
If you create the area you want to rotate first you probably do it by selecting an area and then filling that area. When you have the area selected at first, save the selection to a path so you can get the exact selection back at a later point in time.

If this all sounds too abstract, try upload an example of what you're trying to accomplish - it's easier if we can see what you're trying to accomplish :)

This is from what I did before

I just don't remember how I got the dot pattern to follow the angle of the oval. I remember using the fill tool, but that's about it.

The version of Gimp is the same as I run now: 2.6.11 (on OpenSuse 11.4)
The design had already been done (the oval had already been angled) when I used the fill tool.

Bound to be an easier way, but the brain is not working today.

The first thought is.
Cut the centre out of the object - add alpha channel if required.
Make a new layer underneath and fill with the pattern
Rotate the patterned layer to suit.

A messy process, screen shots http://i.imgur.com/T3e7P.jpg

I will have another think about it. best of luck

edit:
maybe a little bit better, but not much, http://youtu.be/e-24HSPRm14 (2 mins)
