Simulate Promotional Materials

Postby Serenblip » Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:11 am

I enter a lot of design competitions for company logos using Gimp and Inkscape. Some of the entries are just PNG images like mine but some look really professional with the logo simulated on a stack of business cards in the correct perspective and with simulated embossed text and logos. The logos are also simulated on envelopes, billboards with spotlights and T-shirts.

I'm going to try to do this for my entries and I can imagine how it might be done in GIMP using, for example, the perspective tool. I would be interested to hear if anyone has tried this kind of 'client mock up' in GIMP.

Due to time constraints in the competitions I'm sure these entrants are not doing this by hand every time. My guess is it's some sort of commercial plugin for PS. It would be really cool to have one for GIMP don't you think? Although I have no idea how such things are made (predictably).

Does not look like there is a wealth of replies.

It might help if you could post a link to an example.

Gimp does not have a 'macro' function where you can play-back a series of actions. There might be a script somewhere that does what you want, a look around and I did not see anything obvious.

Possibly, providing the images have a constant size you could use ImageMagick in a batch file. (or a bash file if you use linux)

I'm no expert but this screenshot shows how it might be done just for the perspective. There are other functions that will emboss and enhance. Once a batch file is set up then it is up to you to provide the base and top images but after that processing is automatic.

My advice, if you want to try ImageMagick is to ask on their forum, They are very helpful, will have better info than me and might even make you a batch file.

Anything automated or batch like, I turn to Imagemagick. Prepare images, stencils and watermarks in Gimp, and then use IM to prepare the final set of images.

The problem with questions pitched in the way Serenblip has, is that it is hard to answer in a Gimp context, other than "not possible".

You can write your own Gimp scripts but not everyone has the time or patience to learn a computer programming language.

So, with no obvious answer, hence no replies.

All you can do is try and be constructive and point out some alternatives. Looks awful when a message sits there with no replies, looks like no-one cares, which is not true. Just no-one has a "Gimp" answer.
