If you're new to concepts as "bump mapping" and doing "drop shadows" read those tutorials before you proceed to this one.
Wanna touch up your "golden girl's" homepage with some "golden text"? Here comes a Gimp tutorial on how to create shiny golden letters.
First of all create an image with the text/logo like shown here. Further it will be our layer mask.
This is your second image. It contains a blurred copy of the first image [Gaussian Blur (IIR) 8x8]. It should be greyscale.
Your third image containing the gold. This one is quite simple. I rendered clouds and changed the color curves a bit.
Now create a new white image. Do an <Image>-Filters-Light Effects-Lighting Effects.... Activate "Use Bump Mapping" and "Use Environment Mapping". Select the apropriate images.
Here you see the light options.
These are the material options. You've got to play with the values to get an optimal result. Unfortunately different Gimp versions show different behaviour.
After all fiddling with the lighting you should get something like this.
Add a layer mask and paste our first image in it.
Add some shadow and a background. That's all!
