Imagine, you've got your scanned signature or a cool tag to be added to your web page, artwork etc. This tutorial shows you one possibility of touching it up.
This a normal scanned image (greyscale), the paper quality sucks a bit ;-)
<Image>-Colors-Threshold (191...255 or so)
 
Erase the 'lost pixels'. Use the eraser tool with a hard edge. Don't care too much about the roughtness of shapes.
Gaussian Blur (IIR) at 5x5
<Image>-Colors-Levels (111...1.0...143). You've got to play with these values to get an optimal result.
That's all! Looks much cleaner than your scan, eh?
Important: More blurring means a smoother result but also a lost of details!
