Hello.
I thought I'd write a little tutorial as I told somebody how to do something and thought it might do quite well as a tute.
Now the question is: WHAT IS THIS LITTLE SOMETHING?
That's easy. Damaged metal. Have you ever tried to damage metal like this (take a look at the left side)? It's a pretty hard job unless you are acid ;). Or you have GIMP. If you do, consider yourself lucky and damage happily.
One thing before we start: I tend to use many layers, it gives me more control and I can change alot of things very easily even after the whole picture is finished. You don't have to use as many layers as I do if you prefer to work with less, but my advice is to use as many as possible ;), I merged some layers for screenshots for a better understanding, though.
We'll start with a new picture, I took the standart size 256x256 but you can choose any size you like. The background doesn't matter either. I took a nice noisy and self-made bg but actually it doesn't matter at all what bg you choose.
The next step is your shape. Add a new layer and draw it. Draw a simple shape for now, you can get more detailed when you know how to apply this technique. Make it look like some piece of brushed metal, you can find a tutorial on how to do this on this very homepage, gug.sunsite.dk :). I also added a shadow layer.
Now we need a rusty underground. Select the main shape, decrease the selection by 5 pixels, create a new layer and fill the new layer with a rusty thing. play around a bit with noises and color correction here. try to get something like the picture on the left side. Important: use dark colors, try to make it look like rust (brownish). Make sure the rusty layer is below the metal layer.
Add an alpha channel to the metal layer. Now use the lasso tool to draw those crack shapes. Make sure you have the alpha channel selcted and fill them black so that the rusty underground becomes visible in some places.
Ok, we're almost finished. Add two new layers. Set the mode to Overlay. Those layers will be the new home for the highlight/shade effects that will make the cracks look more or less realistic :). Now start drawing the lighting effects, make sure you maintain a certain direction the light comes from and make sure that there are shadows etc. Draw the shadows on the shade layer, the highlights on the highlight layer.
Weehaa, finished, I only had to adjust the drop shadow and make sure the highlights and shades didn't affect anything they shouldn't. I hope you liked my little tutorial. Keep on gimping!
